Family of Eight-Year-Old Victim Awaits Justice Amid Court Delays

The family of an eight-year-old boy who was killed by a dangerous driver in Plumstead face an anxious wait for justice after court delays.
Nicholas Hopkins, 20, drove his motorbike into little Mustafa Ahmed, his 10-year-old brother and their dad as they crossed the road.
Mustafa was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Plumstead Road on February 19 last year.
In November, Hopkins pleaded guilty to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving, as well as driving whilst uninsured and possession of class B drugs.
On Friday (January 26) Hopkins was due to be sentenced at Inner London Crown Court.
But Mustafa’s grieving family were informed that the case would have to be adjourned at late notice because the prosecutor was not available.
Hopkins appeared in court via video link, with curly ginger hair and glasses.
Judge Freya Newbery told him: “For really unfortunate reasons the prosecutor has got stuck at the Old Bailey where she’s involved in a very serious sentencing there.
“She was unable to be released to come to this court. As a result she wouldn’t be able to be here until 3pm or 3.30pm, so I do have to put the sentence back to another day.”
Judge Newbery added: “I know that this will be very disappointing for you, Mr Hopkins, but also for your victims who are waiting anxious for the sentence to take place.”
The sentence will instead take place next Friday (February 2).
Nicholas Hopkins (Image: Met Police)Mustafa was on his way to the mosque in Plumstead on the evening of Sunday, February 19 last year.
While he was crossing the road with his family, Hopkins crashed into them on his motorbike.
Mustafa was later pronounced dead at the scene while his dad was left in a coma for two months.
Detective Sergeant Sam Miles, from the Roads and Transport Policing Command, previously said: “Our thoughts remain with Mustafa’s family – who continue to struggle with the events of that day – as well as the officers and paramedics who were first on scene.
“This is truly a tragic case, caused by the defendants reckless and dangerous driving. Mustafa was only eight years old, and had the rest of his life ahead of him.”

St Leonards Man Convicted of Child Sexual Assault

Darren Sibley, a 40-year-old construction worker from St Leonards, has been sentenced to a prison term exceeding 15 years for the sexual abuse of a young girl.
The series of assaults, which targeted a child under the age of 13, occurred from 2011 to 2016. The abuse was exposed when, in 2020, a friend of the victim courageously reported Sibley’s actions to the Sussex Police.
Following the report, officers reached out to the victim, initiating an investigation supported by specialists in the field.
Sibley was apprehended and faced multiple charges, including five counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and one count of attempted sexual assault of a child under 13. He also faced charges for assaulting an emergency worker and failing to surrender to custody.
During the trial at Hove Crown Court on October 24, 2023, Sibley was convicted of three sexual offences. He admitted guilt to the assault on an emergency worker and to failing to surrender.
On January 8, at Lewes Crown Court, the court imposed a 15-year and three-month prison sentence on Sibley. Additionally, he was subjected to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order to significantly reduce the risk of reoffending. A restraining order has been issued to protect the victim, and Sibley will be registered as a sex offender for life.

Taylor Swift Stalker Charged Again Hours After Court Appearance

A man charged with harassment and stalking in the vicinity of Taylor Swift’s New York City townhouse has been arrested again just hours after his court appearance. David Crowe, 33, from Seattle, Washington, was initially taken into custody on Monday night and charged with two counts of harassment and stalking.
According to reports, Crowe had been seen around Taylor Swift’s property “approximately 30 times” in the last two months. The complaint indicated that a security worker had observed Crowe in the area multiple times since November 25, and he had been warned not to approach the building on ten occasions.
Crowe appeared before the New York Country Criminal Court on Wednesday, where a judge granted supervised release and issued an order of protection. However, shortly after this court appearance, he was rearrested and charged with four counts of criminal contempt.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) responded to an emergency call regarding a “disorderly male” near Taylor Swift’s home. Crowe left the location upon their arrival and was taken into custody without further incident.
It remains unclear whether Taylor Swift was in the property during the incidents involving Crowe. The 33-year-old is scheduled to appear in court on March 3 for the stalking and harassment charges, while the court date for the contempt charges is yet to be decided.
Taylor Swift, with a devoted fan base, has been a target of stalkers and break-ins across her properties in various locations, including New York, California, and Rhode Island. Incidents in the past have prompted increased security measures around the pop star’s residences.
