Isle of Wight Volunteers Hit the Streets with Diabetes Awareness Roadshow
The Isle of Wight is gearing up to tackle Type 2 diabetes head-on with a roadshow bus that’s rolling into Newport. Locals can pop down to St Thomas Square on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 April 2016, from 10am to 4pm, to find out their risk of developing the condition and pick up life-saving advice.
Know Your Risk: Diabetes UK Roadshow Rolls In
Thanks to the Isle of Wight Diabetes UK group’s funding, the Diabetes UK Know Your Risk roadshow is making a stop in Newport. It’s all about spotting the dangers early and helping people take control before it’s too late.
Betty Foss Awareness Days Offer More Support
Alongside the roadshow, the Isle of Wight Diabetes UK group has organised ‘Betty Foss Awareness Days’ at the Riverside Centre in Newport across the same two days, from 10am to 4pm. These free sessions cover:
- Eye and foot care guidance
- Yoga exercises to stay active
- Cookery tips for a diabetes-friendly diet
- General advice on managing diabetes
Local Champion Speaks Out
Heather MacDougall, a Ryde mum diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes aged just five back in 1967, co-ordinates the event. She says:
“Diabetes isn’t really talked about enough, and many people’s understanding is outdated. Some might be living with it unknowingly, risking serious complications. We want to change that. The Know Your Risk roadshow in the town is open to everyone, with heaps of advice and support to help raise awareness and encourage people to get checked.”
Don’t miss this chance to find out your diabetes risk and learn how to stay healthy. Head to Newport’s St Thomas Square and Riverside Centre on 29 and 30 April!
