Hamas Boss Yahya Sinwar Killed in Rafah Blow
The mastermind behind the deadly 7 October attack that ignited the Gaza war, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, has been confirmed dead by Israeli forces. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out a strike in Rafah, southern Gaza, killing Sinwar in a major blow to Hamas.
Israel Confirms Sinwar’s Death
The IDF officially identified Sinwar’s body, announcing: “Yahya Sinwar was eliminated.” Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, slammed Sinwar as a “mass murderer” behind the horrific 7 October assault.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed the killing as “the beginning of the end” for the conflict, but warned, “the task before us is not yet complete.” He urged Israeli citizens to stay strong as military action in Gaza ramps up, especially around Rafah.
World Leaders React
US President Joe Biden called it a “good day” for Israel, the US, and the world. He compared Sinwar’s death to the killing of Osama bin Laden, confirming DNA tests verified his identity. Biden and Netanyahu are reportedly working on plans to secure the release of hostages still held by Hamas.
Vice-President Kamala Harris said, “justice has been served,” urging a focus on ending the conflict and addressing the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Israeli Praise and Operation Details
Israel’s President Isaac Herzog lauded the IDF, Shin Bet, and security forces for eliminating the “mastermind” behind the 7 October terror attack, calling Sinwar responsible for “heinous acts” that spread terror and bloodshed.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, no hostages or civilians were present during the operation. The IDF reportedly killed three other terrorists at the site. Concerns about Sinwar using human shields were disproven, the military confirmed.
US and Israeli Defence Team-Up
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant spoke with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin shortly after the announcement, with Austin briefed amid a NATO meeting in Brussels, showing close US-Israel defense cooperation.
Inside the Raid
Israel’s Kan Radio suggested Sinwar’s death might have come from an unexpected clash rather than a precise, intelligence-led strike. Reports also revealed bodies at the site carried large sums of cash and fake IDs.
Sinwar’s death marks a pivotal moment in Israel’s relentless campaign to crush Hamas leadership and end the bloody war once and for all.
