A woman has tragically died after being hit by a lorry on the M4 in Berkshire in the early hours today. Emergency services raced to the crash scene between Junction 10 and Junction 11 eastbound shortly after 3am.
Paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene. The driver of the massive 44-ton Iceland lorry was treated for shock and is now helping police with their investigation.
Police Probe Fatal M4 Crash
Collision specialists are combing the scene, trying to find out why the woman was walking on the busy motorway’s live carriageway. Officers conducting a fingertip search wore blue gloves as they worked the closed-off area.
M4 Lanes Shut, Chaos on Roads
All three eastbound lanes remain closed and are expected to stay shut until at least lunchtime. Traffic chaos forced many drivers near Reading to abandon their cars and walk to complete morning school runs and journeys.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
Insp Andy Storey from Roads Policing said: “We would appeal to anyone who was driving on either the east or westbound carriageways of the M4 near Junction 11 at around 2.50am to contact police. We want to understand how a pedestrian ended up on the motorway.”
“Enquiries are also ongoing to identify the woman.”
The road eventually reopened, but traffic is slow to return to normal. Anyone with information should call Thames Valley Police Roads Policing at Three Mile Cross on 101.
