Dramatic Rescue Underway at Sheppey Bridge After Man Found Perched on Crossing

A huge rescue operation is in full swing at the base of the Sheppey Bridge, involving a dramatic joint effort from Police, Fire Crews, Coastguard, and paramedics. The old Sheppey Crossing has been shut down completely as teams work to bring the situation under control.

Man in Danger Sparks Full-Scale Alert

Swift action saw two ambulances, a fire engine, and the South East Coast Ambulance Service’s elite “HART” team rush to the scene.

Adding to the scale of the rescue, air ambulances from Kent, Sussex, and Surrey swooped down near Ferry Road. Coastguard Search and Rescue crews donned dry suits before entering the water to aid the operation.

Life-Saving Efforts on the Ground

Medics carried out a rapid sequence induction on the grassy bank with help from paramedics, indicating the seriousness of the man’s condition. Kent Fire and Rescue Service, called at 9.15am, sent two fire engines and a water safety unit to back up South East Coast Ambulance efforts near Sheppey Way, Iwade, Sittingbourne.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “Just after 9am on Wednesday 3 May 2023, Kent Police received a report concerning the welfare of a man on the A249. Emergency services remain at the scene.”

Authorities are on high alert as rescue teams continue their efforts. Roads remain closed, and updates are expected shortly.
