Online shopping is all about snagging bargains from your sofa. But scammers are lurking, ready to swipe your cash this Christmas and January sale season. Don’t get caught out by cyber crooks! Here’s your no-nonsense guide to staying safe and protecting your hard-earned money.
Top Tips to Outsmart Online Scammers
- Shop Smart: Stick to websites and brands you know and trust. Look for the little padlock symbol and “https://” in the web address. Double-check the spelling before entering any personal details.
- Lock Down Your Passwords: Create strong, unique passwords using three random words with uppercase, numbers, and symbols. Never reuse passwords across accounts.
- Enable 2-Step Verification: Add an extra layer of security by turning on two-factor authentication. It asks for a code sent to your phone or an app to prove it’s really you.
- Only Share What’s Necessary: Fill in only the required details marked with an asterisk (*). Never hand over personal security info like your mother’s maiden name or first pet’s name.
- Beware of Phishing: Don’t fall for dodgy emails, calls, or texts. Remember: banks will never ask for your personal info or let anyone access your device remotely.
Police Issue Stark Warning to Bargain Hunters

“But if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Take a moment. Do your research – it could save you hundreds of pounds.”

- Forward phishing emails to [email protected]
- Report scam texts by forwarding the message to 7726 (that spells SPAM!)
- Report fraud or cybercrime at www.actionfraud.police.uk or call 0300 123 2040
- If you’re being hacked right now, call 101 immediately
