Four men who fled the UK following the murder of 16-year-old John Soyoye in Moston have been jailed after being traced overseas and extradited back to Britain.

The four received sentences of more than 10 years each for their involvement in John’s murder on 5 November 2020.

Ruben Candiza was sentenced to 10 years and eight months, while Emerson Teta received 10 years and five months.

Marco Veiga was jailed for 10 years and three months, and Valdo De-Almeida was sentenced to 10 years and two months.

All four had fled abroad following the killing but were eventually located, arrested and extradited following an international investigation involving Greater Manchester Police, the National Crime Agency and overseas law enforcement partners.

Police said another suspect remains outstanding and is expected to be extradited to the UK.

John chased, surrounded and killed

John’s murder followed violence between members of rival gangs in Piccadilly Gardens earlier on 5 November 2020.

Police said 13 members of the Oldham-based Representing the Danger gang subsequently travelled to Moston armed with weapons.

John became separated from others while attempting to escape.

He was chased down, surrounded and subjected to a brutal attack in which he was stabbed, slashed and repeatedly kicked.

Despite efforts to save him, the 16-year-old died at the scene.

Seven men previously jailed

Seven other men were previously convicted following an 11-week trial in 2021 and were jailed in 2022 for their roles in John’s murder.

Greater Manchester Police continued pursuing those who had left the country after the killing, eventually securing the return of the four men now sentenced.

Detective Inspector Neil Higginson said the investigation had “never stopped”, with officers remaining determined to find those who had fled abroad.

He said he hoped the latest sentences would provide John’s family and loved ones with “some further sense that justice has been served”.

Police enquiries remain ongoing as authorities work to secure the extradition of the remaining outstanding suspect.
