Hovertravel’s Bold New Patient Transport Zooms Across the Solent 24/7
Hovertravel has launched a game-changing service to whisk patients across the Solent at any hour. Teaming up with Isle of Wight NHS Trust ambulance crews, the hovercraft can now carry stretchers straight to Southsea and Southampton hospitals on the mainland.
Rapid Patient Transfers Slash Travel Times
Neil Chapman, Hovertravel’s Managing Director, said: “Our Essential LifeLine Timetable keeps lifelines open for key workers and critical freight. Now, thanks to the brilliant work of our engineers in Ryde and Griffon in Southampton, we can get patients to Southsea in under 10 minutes and Southampton in under 40.”
The Marine & Coastguard Agency fast-tracked the crucial modifications, making this lifesaving mission possible in record time.
How It Works: Fast, Safe & NHS-Approved
- On receiving a call, volunteer pilots and crew prep the hovercraft solely for the patient and NHS staff.
- The ambulance drives onto Ryde pad, wheels the stretcher aboard via ramp.
- Patients and equipment are safely secured in the front luggage area with specialised locking points.
- The craft touches down at Southsea or a temporary Itchen River pad.
- Patient transfers into waiting ambulances proceed immediately for speedy hospital admissions.
Maggie Oldham, Chief Executive at Isle of Wight NHS Trust, praised the innovation: “This cuts journey times drastically and frees ambulance resources to better serve our community. It’s a massive boost for patients and NHS staff alike.”
Top Design & Safety Standards
Griffon Hoverwork’s MD, 1 Went, added: “Our design engineers ensured the modifications meet the strict International Maritime Organisation’s High Speed Craft Code. Trials on April 4 passed with flying colours, with NHS and Maritime & Coastguard Agency approval coming in record time.”
Political Backing for Hovertravel’s Vital Service
MP Bob Seely hailed the initiative: “This innovative patient transport will save crucial hours and lighten the Island’s ambulance load. Now, more than ever, efficient medical transport is essential. I stand firmly behind Hovertravel’s Island Rescue initiative.”
If travel is essential, the hovercraft runs on schedule. Otherwise, please stay home and stay safe.
