Care Worker Banned for Theft Snags Trial Job – Then Steals £480 from Vulnerable Elders
Rumana Khatun, 23, landed a Covid-19 social carer trial in June despite a previous indefinite ban from care work. The ban came after theft allegations in 2019, though she was never convicted.
But within days of starting the role, Khatun stole £480 from vulnerable residents living in sheltered accommodation in South Tyneside. Her victims were devastated by her betrayal.
Victims Heartbroken by “Heartless” Abuse of Trust
One elderly woman said she would have gladly helped Khatun if only she had asked. Instead, the young carer took advantage of their kindness for “purely selfish gain.”
On October 28, Khatun was jailed for six months after admitting to theft and breaching her care ban.
“This was an absolutely abhorrent abuse of trust by a woman who preyed on her unsuspecting victims,” said PC Jason Sweeney of Northumbria Police.
“She willingly broke the law, targeting elderly victims when the North-east was united in community spirit. She should be ashamed.”
Swift Police Action Brings Justice
Khatun stole from three residents in Hebburn while shadowing experienced carers. Police traced a £480 cash deposit to her bank account and quickly identified her as the culprit.
“I feel totally unsettled and upset that someone I trusted would do this,” one victim told the court. “They saw us as easy targets due to our age and disability. They could have just asked, and I would have helped.”
Newcastle Crown Court heard Khatun pleaded guilty to all charges. She faces six months behind bars for preying on those she was meant to protect.
