Friend Turned Killer: Jack Ampadu Fatally Stabbed by Mate

Dwayne Stewart-Akers, 38, of Highgate Road, NW5, was found guilty of murdering Jack Ampadu in a brutal February attack. On Friday, 15 October, Harrow Crown Court handed him a life sentence, with a minimum of 25 years to serve, minus 214 days already served behind bars.

Violent, Unprovoked Attack Caught on CCTV

Detective Chief Inspector Claire Hine described the murder as “a violent and unprovoked assault on a man who was – up until that moment – friends with the defendant.”

Jack Ampadu, 37, suffered multiple stab wounds during a savage kitchen knife attack on a communal landing at the flats. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite paramedics’ best efforts.

Stewart-Akers initially pretended to be a victim but was swiftly exposed by quick-thinking officers and arrested. CCTV confirmed the brutal stabbing, and police revealed the two men had been friends before the deadly showdown sparked by an argument.

Aftermath and Ongoing Impact

Stewart-Akers will remain on licence for life if ever released. DCI Hine said: “Our thoughts remain with Jack’s family, and I hope seeing the man responsible convicted and imprisoned brings them some comfort.”

Quick Police Response and Investigation

  • Police and ambulance rushed to Highgate Road flats shortly before 5.40pm on 15 February.
  • Upon arrival, Stewart-Akers falsely claimed a fight was ongoing before fleeing the scene.
  • He was quickly caught and arrested by officers.
  • Specialist Crime Command launched a full murder inquiry, confirming the fatal stabbing via CCTV.
  • A second man arrested was later released without charge.
