Paedophile’s Five-Year Sentence Slammed as ‘Way Too Light’
Raymond Ellis, convicted for a shocking indecent assault committed over 30 years ago, was originally handed just five years behind bars in May 2022. But South Yorkshire Police’s Major Incident Review Team (MIRT) weren’t having it.
Appeal Forces Court to Rethink
The officers believed Ellis’ punishment didn’t match the severity of his crime and pushed for a heavier sentence. Their appeal won the day.
I am pleased the Court of Appeal agreed with our assessment that the sentence originally passed for Ellis’ horrific crime was too lenient,” said Dave Stopford, head of South Yorkshire Police’s MIRT.
Justice Delayed, Not Denied
The victim, targeted at just 17, lived almost her entire adult life without knowing who her attacker was.
“We were able to identify Ellis and bring him before the courts earlier this year thanks to advancements in forensic technology, the tenacity of the officers and staff working within the MIRT, and the assistance of specialist scientists,” Stopford added.
He went on to say, “The sentence imposed did not adequately convey the gravity of Ellis’ crime, nor did it feel like justice for the victim. She has had to live with the trauma of sexual assault for three decades, whereas Ellis would be imprisoned for just a fraction of that time.”
More to Come
A hearing at the Court of Appeal on Friday 29 July is expected to deliver the new sentence, ensuring Ellis faces the punishment he truly deserves.
