Bent Bookies’ Cashier Dodges Jail After Helping Dad Swipe Nearly £4,000
A crooked bookmakers’ cashier has slipped the prison bars after letting her dad pull off a fake robbery and nick over £3,800. Chevvine Darling, 28, was slapped with a suspended sentence after a court found she conspired with her father in a brazen cash heist.
Fake Hold-Up at Ladbrokes Exposed
On 9 October 2016, Darling worked behind the counter at Ladbrokes in Edgware. Her dad, Anthony Whyte, 46, rocked up with a threatening note demanding cash: “Put money in bag no tricks no buzzers.” Acting as if it was a real robbery, Darling handed over £3,870 and later claimed an unknown man had mugged her.
Forensic Clues Link Father and Daughter
- Whyte’s fingerprints were found at the scene.
- Mobile phone records tied him to one of the cashiers.
- Investigators discovered the cashier was his own daughter.
Both were promptly arrested months later, with Darling caught red-handed communicating with ‘dad’ on the day of the sham caper.
Sentences Reflect Serious Breach of Trust
At Guilford Crown Court on Friday 4 May, Darling was sentenced to 21 months behind bars — but suspended for two years — plus 200 hours of community service. Whyte wasn’t so lucky. He copped 15 months for the Ladbrokes theft and a further 21 months for another robbery in December 2016, stealing just over £400. He also got a 30-month driving ban.
Detective Constable Emma Butcher said: “Chevvine Darling abused her position of trust to help her father steal a significant sum. The other cashier was left terrified, believing it was a genuine robbery. The sentences handed out show the seriousness of these crimes.”
