Hero cop PC Chris Duffy nominated for top bravery award after brutal attack
A fearless Nottinghamshire officer has been put forward for the National Police Bravery Awards 2024 following a savage assault that left him with serious head injuries.
Ambush during suspect arrest
In the early hours of 11 March 2023, PC Chris Duffy and Police Dog Reno rushed to the Sunnydale Inn in Mansfield after reports of a disturbance. When a suspect fled, Duffy gave chase and ordered Reno to detain him in a nearby alley.
But just as he was securing the suspect, Mason Perkins – the suspect’s brother – launched a brutal attack from behind, hitting Duffy so hard it knocked him to the ground with a severe head wound.
Fighting pain to catch the attacker
Despite the pain and injury, PC Duffy fought back fiercely. He kept control of PD Reno and the suspect, pressed his emergency button, and waited for backup. Even while receiving first aid, he spotted Perkins trying to escape and gave a live radio update, helping colleagues track and arrest the attacker.
A forensic pathologist later revealed the officer suffered a seven-inch gash exposing his skull – a horrific injury that tells the story of the violent assault.
High praise from police chiefs
Simon Riley, Nottinghamshire Police Federation Chair, hailed PC Duffy’s “extraordinary courage” and dedication under threat. Chief Constable Kate Meynell slammed the attack as “completely unacceptable” and praised the swift action that brought Perkins to justice.
A true example of bravery
PC Chris Duffy’s nomination for the Police Bravery Awards 2024 shines a spotlight on his selfless commitment to keeping communities safe despite life-threatening danger.
Nottinghamshire Police and the public salute a true hero.
