Boat inferno at Chichester Marina leaves two vessels sunk after fiery explosions!

Blazing Night at 1 Marina, Birdham

Chaos erupted at Chichester Marina on Wednesday night as a fierce fire and a series of explosions tore through the dockyard. The drama started at 9.56pm when West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the scene with three fire engines battling the blaze.

Multiple boats caught fire, but despite heroic efforts, two vessels couldn’t be saved and ended up sinking beneath the flames and smoke. The shocked Selsey Coastguard reported hearing “multiple explosions” as the inferno spread rapidly from one boat to the next, causing extensive damage.

Emergency Response and Aftermath

Authorities swiftly sealed off the marina, urging locals and visitors to steer clear of the area. Alongside firefighters, Chichester Marina staff, the Harbour Master, and Conservancy officials jumped in to help contain the devastation.

“Unfortunately the two vessels weren’t able to be saved despite best efforts from the fire service and sadly both vessels sunk,” confirmed a Coastguard spokesperson.

The fire was finally brought under control by 12.45am Thursday, with emergency teams standing down after hours of intense work. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far.

Ongoing Investigation & Safety Warning

Authorities continue probing the cause of the blaze while advising boat owners and residents to stay alert. The Coastguard issued a firm reminder:

  • “In an emergency out at sea or along the coast dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
