Convicted Killer Murdered Behind Bars at Top-Security Jail
John Mansfield, 63, a life-sentenced murderer, was fatally attacked by a fellow inmate inside HMP Whitemoor’s Close Supervision Centre (CSC) on April 13. Despite prison staff’s swift response, Mansfield died at the scene in one of Britain’s toughest jails reserved for the most dangerous offenders.
A 44-year-old prisoner has since been arrested on suspicion of murder, with police launching a full investigation.
Brutal Past of Convicted Killer John Mansfield
Mansfield was serving life for the horrific, drug-fueled killing of his neighbour Ann Alfanso in 2006. The 63-year-old was stabbed nearly 100 times in her Manchester home. With 75 prior convictions, Mansfield was branded a “very dangerous criminal” by judges, known for extreme violence.
His violent history didn’t end there. In 2014, he was sentenced to a second life term after viciously attacking inmate John Orme with a broken plate, severing an artery. Earlier, he’d assaulted another prisoner with a chair leg in Manchester’s notorious Strangeways prison.
Judge Jeremy Richardson QC said at sentencing: “You killed an old lady. Now you have convictions for two violent offences in prison. I have every reason to believe it will never be safe to release you.”
Violence Spirals in Britain’s Prisons
The killing comes just a day after Hashem Abedi, the Manchester Arena bomber, viciously attacked three officers at HMP Frankland in Durham – dousing them with boiling oil and stabbing them with makeshift weapons.
Former prison governor and government adviser Professor Ian Acheson slammed the violence as evidence of a “collapse” in prison security.
“Two violent incidents over the weekend at our highest security prisons have lifted the lid on a collapse of security and safety for both staff and prisoners,” he said. “This is completely unacceptable. But it is also becoming normalised.”
A 2023 Chief Inspector report branded HMP Whitemoor the “filthiest” prison ever inspected, with Acheson warning: “If you can’t get the bins emptied in these places, you can be sure everything else is going wrong too.”
Ministry of Justice Response and Ongoing Investigation
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said:
“Police are investigating the death of prisoner John Mansfield at HMP Whitemoor on Sunday, April 13. It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
The Senseless Killings Behind Bars
Mansfield’s original crime was described by police as “inhuman and senseless”, with Detective Inspector Steve Eckerlsey at the time stating:
“Ann was an easy target, and her murderer knew it. He went from a seemingly helpful neighbour to a savage killer. We may never understand why.”
Now, questions mount over how such deadly violence erupted within one of the UK’s most secure prison wings—and whether more lives hang in the balance.
