Drink and Drug-Driver Jailed After Horrific Crash Leaves Mum Fighting for Life

A reckless drink and drug-driver who caused a terrifying head-on collision and left a young mother critically injured has been sentenced to four years behind bars.

Savage Crash on A22

Terry Colley, 46, from London’s Swanwick Close, was caught driving wildly on the A22 at Golden Cross, East Sussex, on 12 November 2023. The dad-of-two swerved straight into the path of Sophie, 29, who was out buying Christmas presents.

Tests showed Colley’s blood alcohol level was nearly double the legal limit, and he had cocaine in his system. After the crash, courageous witnesses pulled the unconscious Colley from his burning Skoda. Tragically, his dog didn’t survive the blaze.

Meanwhile, Sophie was trapped in her BMW. Firefighters had to cut her loose before she was airlifted to hospital, placed in an induced coma in critical condition.

No Apology, Just Denial

Despite CCTV evidence and eyewitness accounts, Colley denied responsibility for 18 months. He only pleaded guilty on the first day of his trial at Lewes Crown Court on 22 April 2025.

Judge Mooney slammed Colley: “This was the worst example of dangerous driving I have ever seen. His delayed guilty plea was an act of self-preservation and self-pity. He showed not a shred of remorse.”

At the time of the crash, Colley had 144mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood – the legal limit is 80mg – and cocaine in his system.

The Devastating Toll on Sophie

Sophie, a mother of two, faces a long, painful road ahead. She has undergone multiple surgeries, suffers chronic pain, and battles PTSD. She can’t drive and has lost the life she once knew. Her partner has given up his job to care for her full-time.

“I was the happiest I’d ever been. That happiness was ripped away in an instant. I’ve lost my spleen, I live in constant pain, and I can no longer be the mum I was,” Sophie revealed.

Sentencing Drama

Colley skipped his sentencing hearing on 23 April but was quickly found and taken into custody. He was sentenced in his absence to four years in prison for causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He’s also banned from driving for six years and one month.

In a separate case, Colley received an extra two months for breaching a non-molestation order against a former partner. He was slapped with a 15-year restraining order and ordered to pay a victim surcharge.

Police React

Detective Constable David Symonds said: “Colley cowardly hid behind lies until the very last moment. Now the truth is out, and Sophie can hopefully begin to heal without the burden of his deception.”
