Helicopter Crashes on Isle of Wight, One Seriously Injured

A helicopter plunged into a field on the Isle of Wight this morning, sparking a major emergency operation and leaving one person seriously hurt.

Massive Emergency Response Launched

The crash happened just after 9:30am between Gold Hill and Shanklin, triggering a swift and large-scale emergency response.

  • Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service rushed multiple fire engines to the scene.
  • Isle of Wight Ambulance Service sent four ambulances, a rapid response paramedic, and an operational commander.
  • Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was scrambled, airlifting one casualty to southampton/" title="Southampton" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Southampton General Hospital.

Police closed nearby roads and urged motorists to steer clear of the area.

Witness Describes Helicopter “Spiralling” Before Crash

A local witness reported seeing the helicopter “spiralling” out of control before vanishing from sight. It’s believed the aircraft clipped a hedge line prior to crashing in the field.

Local Councillor Adrian Whittaker described the situation as “very lucky” considering the heavy Bank Holiday traffic nearby.

He added the helicopter was carrying up to four people and was likely on a sightseeing flight.

AAIB Launches Full Investigation

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) confirmed they have dispatched a team to the scene. A spokesperson said,

“The AAIB was notified of an accident involving a light helicopter on the Isle of Wight this morning. We are deploying a team to commence an investigation.”

Details on the total number of people on board and the condition of others involved remain unclear as the investigation continues. Authorities expect to remain at the crash site for several hours.
