Tragic Istanbul Holiday: German-Turkish Family Poisoned by Hotel Chemicals

Four Family Members Fall Sick and Die in Mysterious Illness

A German-Turkish family’s dream getaway turned into a nightmare in Istanbul’s Fatih district. Masal, 3, her brother Muhammet, 6, and their parents, Çiğdem and Servet Böcek, all fell violently ill and later died while staying at a local hotel. Initial thoughts pointed to food poisoning, but new forensic evidence suggests a deadly chemical exposure inside the hotel.

Investigators Pin Deaths on Toxic Chemicals, Not Food Poisoning

“We have considered the circumstances, the family’s medical history, and the fact that two other hotel guests are hospitalised with similar symptoms,” said an official statement.

“It is believed the mother and children most likely died from chemical substance poisoning from the hotel environment. Food poisoning is less likely.”

Tests – including pathological, microbiological, and toxicological analyses – are still underway to determine the exact cause of death.

Last Known Movements: What the Family Ate Before Falling Ill

The Böcek family flew in from Hamburg on November 9 and started feeling sick by the 12th, when they were rushed to hospital with severe nausea and vomiting. The day before their symptoms began, they tried local delicacies in Ortaköy – including midye (stuffed mussels), kokoreç (calf intestines), and tavuk tantuni (chicken wraps) – and bought Turkish delights in Fatih before heading back to their hotel.

11 Arrested as Major Probe Reveals Possible Contamination

Istanbul’s Chief Prosecutor’s Office has launched a full-scale investigation. Eleven suspects are now in custody, including street food vendors, two hotel employees, and the owner of the pest control company responsible for the hotel.

  • Mussel seller YD
  • Turkish delight seller FT
  • Kokoreç seller EE
  • Café owner FMO
  • Two hotel staff members
  • Pest control company owner

Despite intensive medical treatment, Çiğdem and her children died last week. Servet passed away on Monday after six days in intensive care.
