Mum Charged Over Deaths of Toddler and Five-Year-Old in Dagenham
Kara Alexander, 44, has been charged at the Old Bailey with the deaths of two young brothers, Marley Thomas, five, and Elijah Thomas, two, in Dagenham.
Tragic Discovery After 999 Call
The children were last seen alive on December 15 in the afternoon. Their father, Selvin Thomas, grew worried and called 999 the next day. After forcing his way into the family home, he made the heartbreaking discovery of the two boys dead inside.
Police say the children may have been suffocated or drowned, but full post-mortem results are still pending. The father was told the children were sleeping upstairs before finding them cold and lifeless.
Defendant Arrested Nearby
Following the discovery, Alexander was found by police lurking in a nearby garden and immediately arrested. She appeared in court on Thursday, facing charges of murder.
Prosecutor Philip Evans KC told the court: “The children were last seen alive on CCTV with the defendant late on December 15. Preliminary findings suggest their breathing was interfered with, possibly smothering or drowning.”
Legal Proceedings Upcoming
A plea hearing is set for March 9, 2019. A preliminary trial is scheduled for July 10, 2019. Alexander remains in custody pending further court appearances.
