Rotherham Kids Snatched from Forced Marriages by Sheffield Court
Several children in Rotherham feared to be trapped in forced marriages have been saved by a Sheffield court, which slapped them with Forced Marriage Protection Orders (FMPOs). The action came after Rotherham’s Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) team, backed by Rotherham Council and South Yorkshire Police Legal Services, flagged serious concerns.
What’s a Forced Marriage? And How’s It Different?
Forced marriage means one or both people are married against their will, usually under pressure or abuse. It’s NOT the same as arranged marriage, where both sides agree to help choose a spouse. FMPOs are legal weapons used to keep victims safe. They can work alongside criminal probes or stand alone. Break one? You could end up behind bars.
Police Act Fast to Protect the Kids
“Concerns were raised about the welfare of several children following a partner agency referral,” said Temporary Detective Sergeant Tom Bishop from Rotherham’s PVP team. “Police and children’s social care took swift, positive action. All the children are now protected by court-granted FMPOs.”
“Across South Yorkshire, adults and children are already shielded by FMPOs. We take these cases dead seriously, and the courts will consider if more orders are needed.”
Arrest Made, But More To Come?
On October 21, a 42-year-old Rotherham woman was arrested on suspicion of forced marriage offences. She’s now on bail as inquiries continue. The FMPOs were officially granted on October 25.
If you suspect forced marriage is happening, ring South Yorkshire Police on 101. In an emergency, dial 999 immediately.
