Reckless Driver Jailed for 12 Years After Fatal Crash
Asim Bashir, 48, was handed a 12-year prison sentence for a deadly crash that killed Christopher Hunt, 33, and left Bashir’s own family seriously injured.
Deadly Overtake on A47
The horror unfolded on October 8, 2021, when Bashir tried to overtake several vehicles in his grey BMW M8 along the westbound A47 near Wittering. His wife, 12-year-old son, and two younger sons—aged 10 and six months—were all in the car.
Bashir’s reckless overtake caused a brutal head-on smash with Christopher Hunt’s red Ford Fiesta. The Fiesta was catapulted through a tree line before exploding into flames. Tragically, Hunt died at the scene.
Family Injured in Terrifying Crash
Passers-by rushed to help Bashir’s family, who managed to escape the wrecked BMW. Firefighters had to cut Bashir out of the mangled vehicle. His wife and two sons suffered severe injuries. The family’s youngest boy, just four years old, was left wheelchair-bound with life-changing wounds.
Justice Served After Seven-Day Trial
After a week-long trial in January, Bashir was found guilty of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving. At cambridge/" title="Cambridge" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Cambridge Crown Court on February 26, 2024, he received a 12-year jail term and a 14-year driving ban.

Christopher Hunt’s family released a statement expressing relief at the verdict and gratitude to the police and court for their commitment to justice.
