Brutal Abuse Case Shocks Welwyn Garden City

Darryl Harding, 53, of Little Hardings, Welwyn Garden City, has been jailed for seven years for causing grievous bodily harm with intent (S18 GBH). He received an extra 18 months for controlling and coercive behaviour and six months for attempting to escape custody, all running concurrently. On top of this, Harding faces an extended licence of four years after serving 8.5 years behind bars. His former partner is protected by an indefinite restraining order.

Eight Years of Terror

The court heard Harding subjected his ex-partner, a woman in her 40s, to relentless physical, emotional, and psychological abuse over eight long years. The torment left her suicidal.

Detective Constable Erik Gale, Domestic Abuse Investigation and Safeguarding Unit, said: “This is one of the worst cases of domestic abuse I have ever seen. She thought Harding would actually kill her. After stabbing/" title="Stabbing" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">stabbing her and then himself in January this year, he told her they were both going to die that night. But it wasn’t just the physical abuse; he controlled her every move and gaslit her until she became a shadow of her former self.”

Violence, Control and Shocking Cruelty

The court heard Harding’s violent outbursts included smashing TVs, mirrors, and punching holes in walls. He then turned his fury on his partner, destroying her phone to cut off contact with friends and family. In a horrifying act, he set fire to her kitchen curtains and threw two pet turtles into the garden, where they died.

Even after police intervened and he was imprisoned in 2020, Harding broke bail conditions to meet his ex at a pub in Welwyn Garden City. There, the psychological abuse continued, climaxing when he tried to strangle her in a hotel.

Jailed for Stabbing and Abuse

In January, Harding stabbed his ex in the neck and wrist, then stabbed himself, threatening to kill them both. Treated in hospital while in police custody, he later attempted to escape but was quickly re-arrested.

Detective Constable Gale added: “Harding is violent, controlling and deceptive. I’m glad he’s been sentenced. The victim was incredibly brave to come forward and is now focusing on rebuilding her life with support and counselling. She’s very grateful for police involvement, admitting they saved her life.”
