Kent Man Jailed for 13 Years Over Horrific Global Child Abuse Ring
A 52-year-old man from Swanley, Kent, has been slammed with a 13-year prison sentence after admitting to directing the sexual abuse of children worldwide.
How the Sick Operation Was Uncovered
Matthew Bower was caught after the FBI tipped off the National Crime Agency (NCA). The FBI had intercepted reports that a UK man was paying for images of a 15-year-old girl being sexually abused. The girl told US police in August 2017 she’d been abused by a female relative, who took photos that were then sold to Bower for cash.
The woman behind the lens was arrested by the FBI and handed over incriminating email, username, and PayPal info that led straight to Bower.
Dirt from Devices Reveals Chilling Details
Following his arrest on 22 August 2017, police seized several devices from Bower’s home. Investigators uncovered chat logs where Bower, known online as ‘evo5_mat’, directed the abuse. He negotiated explicit acts and payments, even stating, “SENT U 80 SO EXPECT A LOT.”
The NCA found he received 308 images and two live-streamed videos featuring the victim between 2016 and 2017. Financial records showed Bower sent around £6,000 over six years, mostly as payment for abuse material.
More Victims and Disturbing Contacts
Bower encouraged others online to sexually abuse children and coerced youngsters via Skype into sending naked photos or performing sexual acts. Two US girls, aged 8 and 15, were safeguarded after being targeted.
Despite initially claiming his accounts had been hacked, Bower finally pleaded guilty in October 2023 to 15 offences, including causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and possessing over 1,700 indecent images, some of the most serious category A.
Strong Words from Lead Investigator
Jen Cruickshank, Senior Investigating Officer at the NCA, said: “Bower is clearly a dangerous individual with a depraved sexual interest in children. He actively sought victims online for his sick gratification.”
“I’d like to pay tribute to the victims who bravely spoke out. Their courage was key in identifying Bower and protecting further children.”
“The NCA remains committed to stamping out child abuse globally, working closely with partners worldwide.”
Judges Declare Bower a Dangerous Offender
Sentencing at Croydon Crown Court on 25 January, HHJ Lowe handed down an extended prison term, warning: “I have no hesitation in concluding you are dangerous.”
The offences spanned nearly a decade, from 2008 to 2017, leaving a trail of abuse across borders.
