Life Sentence for Man Who Murdered Neighbour in Brutal Attack

A man has been jailed for life after punching his neighbour to the ground and stamping on him in a savage assault. Andrew Claydon, 45, was today sentenced for the murder of Matthew Pearson following a shocking attack on Lytham Road, Blackpool.

Fatal Assault Near Public House

The violent incident happened on 18th July 2020 at around 6:45pm near the Farmer’s Arms pub. Police and paramedics rushed to the scene after reports of a vicious assault. Mr Pearson, injured and bleeding from his ear, had staggered back to his flat nearby.

Despite emergency treatment and specialist care at Royal Preston Hospital, Matthew died from severe brain injuries on 2nd August. CCTV clearly caught Claydon punching Mr Pearson without warning, then stamping on his unconscious body.

Evidence Led to Conviction

  • Claydon was arrested just two days after the attack.
  • Initially charged with grievous bodily harm, the charge was upgraded to murder following Mr Pearson’s death.
  • Post-mortem confirmed cause of death as blunt head trauma.
  • Investigators used CCTV, witness accounts, and forensic evidence to prove Claydon’s guilt.

Claydon admitted manslaughter but denied murder. A jury at Preston Crown Court found him guilty, condemning the attack as “callous and cowardly.”

Tribute to Matthew Pearson

“Matthew was a kind, gentle and intelligent man with a smile you would never forget. He loved the outdoors, reading, and history. He had the biggest heart and was always looking out for others. His death is a tragic loss to all who knew him.” — Family of Matthew Pearson

Detective Inspector Mark Dickinson said: “Claydon’s motive remains unknown. Matthew was attacked with no warning and posed no threat. Even after being knocked unconscious, Matthew was violently stamped on. This was an unprovoked and savage assault on a vulnerable man.”

Claydon must serve at least 14 years in prison before parole can be considered.
