Window Cleaner Who Targeted Elderly for Jewellery Burglary Found Guilty
A 28-year-old man preyed on elderly homeowners by tricking his way into their houses and filching precious jewellery. David Thomas George Hampshire of Dagenham has admitted four burglaries and will be sentenced later this month.
Trusted Window Cleaner Turns Burglar
Hampshire worked as a window cleaner, using his job to gain trust. He convinced victims to let him inside to use their toilets, then sneaked into bedrooms to swipe jewellery. On 21 September 2018, after cleaning windows on Rosedale Road, he returned to collect payment and asked to use the toilet. The 69-year-old homeowner allowed him upstairs unsupervised. Later, she found jewellery missing and reported her suspicions.
Repeated The Crime Across Dagenham
Just weeks later, on 2 November, Hampshire struck again at homes in Walfrey Gardens and Farmway. The victims recognised and trusted him but noticed jewellery was gone shortly after his visit. Hampshire was arrested that very evening.
In October, a 70-year-old victim reported missing items, linking Hampshire to the theft. He was arrested once more, charged, and remanded to appear in court.
Guilty Plea After Police Crack Down
Initially denying all charges, Hampshire changed his plea to guilty on day one of his trial at 1 Crown Court on 13 May. Sentencing is set for 31 May.
“Although most of the items stolen were not worth a great deal of money, each was of significant sentimental value,” said PC Raheel Sarwar, who led the probe. “Hampshire completely abused the kindness of his victims. Thanks to our thorough investigation, he had no choice but to admit his guilt. We hope this brings some closure to those affected by his deceit.”
