Sussex Police Clear Officer Over Bus Arrest Drama
Sussex Police have ruled the actions of their officer during a bus arrest were “reasonable and proportionate.” No misconduct proceedings will be launched.
Man Arrested After Abusing Passengers
The drama unfolded when officers were called to deal with a man who was abusive to other passengers and refused to leave the bus. He was arrested on July 18 for assaulting an emergency worker and using threatening or abusive behaviour.
The man was released on conditional court bail and is set to return to court on August 15.
Police Review Video and Evidence
Only a snippet of the arrest was shared on social media on July 16, sparking concern. Sussex Police’s Professional Standards Department reviewed the full bus CCTV, body cam footage, witness statements, and a mandatory use of force report.
A spokesperson said: “We strive to learn from every interaction.” The incident has also been shared with the Independent Advisory Group, made up of local community members, to gauge public perception of police use of force.
East Sussex Police Stand by Their Officers
East Sussex Division Superintendent Till Sanderson addressed public worries, stating:
“We understand the public’s concern about the social media video, but such videos rarely provide a complete and accurate picture of the event.”
He added:
“Police officers are highly trained in use of force techniques and know their actions must be proportionate and reasonable. They will be held accountable where appropriate.”
