I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper visited the site today, laying a wreath with local MP Patrick Hurley. She met police, the crime commissioner, the mayor, and first responders. A public statement is expected later.

Shocked witnesses told of chaos and anguish. One said, “You see parents with children and it just gives you a bit of a shake at the moment.” Another recalled hearing “screaming” and seeing children covered in blood.
