HGV Driver’s Wild A1 Chase Ends in Jail
High-Speed Drama on the A1
Jason Standley, 42, turned the A1 into a danger zone on the evening of 2 November. Driving an Iveco HGV near Cropwell, he ignored police orders to pull over and instead sped off, dangerously close to pursuing officers. Even after police used a Stinger device to deflate his tyres, the reckless driver continued the chase for several brutal minutes before ditching the lorry near Fernwood, Newark.
Manhunt Ends in Underbrush
Standley, from Crofton, Wakefield, tried to evade capture by hiding in the undergrowth. But a vigilant security guard at a nearby service station spotted him. Police swiftly arrested Standley, who later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.
Justice Served at Nottingham Crown Court
On 5 December, Standley was sentenced to 19 months behind bars and banned from driving for six years. If he ever wants to hit the road again, he’ll need to pass an extended driving test – no shortcuts for this speed demon.
Police Praise Quick-Thinking Heroes
PC Haddon Smith, Nottinghamshire Police Roads Policing Unit, said: “This was an extremely dangerous display of driving that could very easily have resulted in serious injury to police officers or other road users. An HGV driven like that on the roads poses a huge risk. It was vital we ended this pursuit quickly. “This was an excellent team effort. I want to particularly thank the brave security guard who helped officers detain Standley and bring him into custody.”
