Flames and thick black smoke billowed from a yacht in Ryde Harbour this lunchtime, sparking a major emergency response.
Firefighters Rush to Burning Yacht
Fire crews from Newport and Ryde raced to the scene, battling the blaze onboard the yacht. The UK Coastguard’s Independent Lifeboat and Ryde Rescue teams were also deployed from the Coastguard Operations Centre in Fareham.
Investigation Underway After Incident
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency confirmed two people were onboard. Thankfully, one person escaped unharmed and is safe onshore. The agency said:
“Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and the Ryde Rescue Boat have been sent to the scene, along with the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Safety Precautions in Place
Ryde Harbour Master and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service were alerted immediately. Authorities urged the public to keep a safe distance as emergency teams work to control the blaze.
“The person on board has made it safely off the boat,” said officials. “He is safe and well and does not require medical treatment.”
