Student Faces Trial for Running Over Teen in Rusholme Horror Crash

University Student Denies Attempted Murder

Ibraheem Anwar, 23, a Manchester university accountancy and finance student, has denied attempting to murder a 14-year-old boy. The youngster was allegedly run over by Anwar’s Audi A4 during a confrontation on July 13 last year in Rusholme. Anwar admitted dangerous driving but rejects the more serious charges. He is currently on trial at Manchester Crown Court.

Violent Incident on Rusholme’s Heald Place

The shocking incident happened shortly after 7:40 pm when emergency services rushed to Heald Place, finding the boy badly injured and rushed into intensive care. Anwar and two friends were at the scene before speeding off. The student surrendered to police the very next day.

Fight Over Cannabis Ends in Chaos

On the stand, Anwar said he and his mates were heading to get food on the Curry Mile when trouble kicked off. After parking, one friend started smoking cannabis. The 14-year-old offered to sell them more, but Anwar’s friend refused. The teen then asked to borrow a phone to save a contact but fled with it instead. Anwar claimed he noticed what looked like a knife tucked into the boy’s waistband.

He said his passenger urged him to “stop him” as the teen ran away. Soon after, CCTV showed Anwar’s Audi mounting the curb and striking the boy. The prosecution insists Anwar deliberately drove at the youngster, a charge Anwar fiercely denies. He claims he had “no intention of harming” the boy and acted out of panic.

Victim’s Severe Injuries & Aftermath

The 14-year-old spent 12 days in hospital recovering from serious injuries. Police found a machete and four blocks of cannabis on him after the crash. Following the incident, Anwar fled the scene, spending the night in his car before handing himself in to police the next day, expressing deep remorse.

Residing on Lytham Road, Flixton, Trafford, Anwar faces additional charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. His trial is ongoing, with jurors aware of his guilty plea to dangerous driving.
