Massive Police Crackdown in London Sees Hundreds of Arrests and Weapons Seized

From 4 October to 14 November, London’s Met Police launched Operation Autumn Nights to tackle violent crime as the nights got darker and the festive season loomed. Officers ramped up patrols in high-crime hotspots, targeting the most dangerous offenders while pushing diversion schemes to cut reoffending.

Staggering Stats from Autumn Nights Operation

  • 116 individuals referred to the DIVERT intervention programme
  • 835 weapons confiscated
  • 38 firearms recovered
  • 504 vehicles seized
  • 777 hotspot patrols focused on protecting women and girls
  • 568 arrests for violent and sexual offences

Targeting crooks on transport routes, police teamed up with bordering forces during Operation Pandilla. They arrested over 100 suspects and seized 18 weapons. Smart use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) helped intercept offenders trafficking drugs and weapons into the capital.

Special Focus on Violence Against Women and Girls

The Met piloted Project Vigilant in Lambeth and Southwark, sending teams to patrol busy nightlife spots for predatory offenders. Weekend town centre teams also bolstered policing to keep London’s night-time economy safe.

“We are dedicated to making London feel safe for everyone who lives, visits and works here,” said Commander Alex Murray, the Met’s lead for tackling violence. “Autumn Nights has led to reductions in robbery and knife crime, restoring public trust through strong patrols and targeted operations to keep women safe.”

He added, “Everyone needs to work together — from police and councils to schools, communities, activists, NGOs and families. No piece of information about knife crime is too small. Crimestoppers offers anonymity and can’t trace your call or device. Help us save lives by calling 0800 555 111 or filling in their online form.”

Sharp Drops in Crime Compared to Pre-Pandemic Levels

  • Homicides down 7% (9 fewer victims)
  • Knife crime down 32% (4,105 fewer offences)
  • Knife crime with injury down 21% (718 fewer victims)
  • Knife injury in under-25s down 28% (395 fewer victims)
  • Personal robbery down 44% (13,453 fewer victims)
  • Personal robbery knife injury down 35% (162 fewer victims)
  • Gun crime down 36% (643 fewer offences)
  • Lethal barrel discharges down 20% (44 fewer offences)

Despite these wins, the Met warned against complacency. “There’s more to do,” said Commander Murray. “We’ll keep using every power and tactic to protect Londoners.”
