Ex-Inspector Graham Dyson Returns to Kirklees Streets as PCSO

After years policing through the era of Happy Mondays and Italia 90, former Huddersfield Inspector Graham Dyson is back on the beat. Now training and ready to hit the streets again, he’s joined the Batley and Spen Neighbourhood Policing Team as a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO).

A Dream Role Revisited

Graham says he’s excited to dive back into community policing and make a real difference for local neighbourhoods. “Policing has always been my dream job. I’m thrilled to be back, especially as a PCSO,” he said. “I started working with PCSOs when they were first introduced in 2003 and immediately loved the role. They quickly became the vital link between the community and the police.”

Graham first joined as a special constable in 1990, went full-time in 1995, and retired in late 2022.

From Inspector to Lifesaver

His service record is impressive. Graham spent 13 years in Bradford and Halifax, rose to inspector, then moved to Leeds before becoming Huddersfield’s Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) inspector four years ago.

He tackled tough community and anti-social behaviour issues, like those on Huddersfield’s Walpole Estate, and performed life-saving CPR five times. Earlier this year, he earned a District Commander’s commendation for risking himself to provide first aid to an assault victim during a Huddersfield disorder.

Back to Basics: Out on the Beat

Graham loves that his new PCSO role puts him face-to-face with locals and allows him to take personal responsibility for neighbourhood issues. “PCSOs are known in their communities and are a reassuring presence on the doorstep. It’s about building confidence in policing and being that visible figure people can count on,” he said.

“This is exactly what I signed up for 30 years ago as a PC – being out on the beat, meeting people, and being a proper copper, as my mum would say.”

Team Batley & Spen Welcomes Experience

Inspector David Bates praised Graham’s return. “Graham brings a wealth of experience to our team and to the people of Batley and Spen. PCSOs and officers like him are the lifeblood of neighbourhood policing we want to provide, and residents want to see.”

“We’re tackling several pressing issues in the area and urge locals to keep contacting us so officers like Graham can step in and make a difference.”
