Firefighters Battle Blaze at Lewisham Flat
Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters swarmed Russett Way in Lewisham last night to tackle a fierce flat fire.
Communal Area Goes Up in Flames
The fire broke out in a communal area on the sixth floor, damaging part of the building. Luckily, there were no reported injuries.
“The fire had started in an outdoor communal area off the sixth-floor lobby,” said Station Commander Richard Hamilton.
Residents Rescued From Scaffolding
Firefighters heroically rescued a man and a woman stranded on scaffolding using a 9-metre ladder. Around 60 residents evacuated before crews arrived, while others stayed put in unaffected flats.
Road Closures and Fire Response
- Lewisham Road was shut between Morden Hill and John Penn Street due to the blaze.
- Brigade’s 999 Control Officers handled 16 calls reporting the fire.
- The fire was reported at 01:53 and was under control by 02:50.
- Fire crews from Greenwich, Lewisham, Deptford, Lee Green, and New Cross rushed to the scene.
The Metropolitan Police and fire brigade are now investigating the cause of the blaze.
