Police Dog Killed After Train Collision While Hunting Burglary Suspects
An Avon & Somerset Police Dog has tragically died after being struck by a train during a search for burglary suspects.
Hero German Shepherd Fatally Injured on Duty
PD Jet, a six-year-old German Shepherd, was tracking offenders following a burglary at a commercial premises in Yate on the morning of 14 April. The dog accidentally wandered onto a hidden section of railway line and was hit by a train.
Despite emergency treatment over the next 24 hours, Jet’s injuries were too severe. Avon & Somerset Police made the heartbreaking decision to put him to sleep at midday on 15 April.
Outstanding Suspects Still at Large
The suspects involved in the burglary remain at large as enquiries continue. Jet’s efforts were part of ongoing attempts to bring the offenders to justice.

Tactical Support Teams Chief Inspector Jason Shears said:
“We are incredibly sad at the loss of PD Jet. Jet was a determined and focused Police Dog who loved working in the many important roles our dogs perform to keep our communities safe.
“Jet and his handler shared a special bond built on months of hard work and training. He will be deeply missed by all in Avon and Somerset Police.”
A spokesperson for Avon & Somerset Police dogs added on Twitter:
“It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the death of PD Jet, injured while on duty yesterday morning. Jet will be missed by all within Avon and Somerset Police.”
Since joining from Devon and Cornwall Constabulary last September, Jet had an impressive record, locating wanted and vulnerable persons and aiding vital police work.
