High Court Greenlights UK Rwanda Deportation Plan
After months of legal tussles and fierce backlash, the High Court has ruled the UK government’s controversial policy to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda is legal.
Policy Sparked Outrage and Legal Fights
The plan, announced in April, targets asylum seekers crossing the Channel on small boats, sending them to Rwanda for their claims to be processed. Then-Home Secretary Priti Patel insisted the scheme would deter dangerous journeys.
But human rights groups, charities, and opposition parties slammed the policy as inhumane, leading to the first scheduled flight being cancelled in June. That flight, carrying four people, was blocked by legal challenges backed by the European Court of Human Rights, which warned of “a real risk of irreversible harm.”
Leaders Pledge to Push Scheme Despite Backlash
Despite the hurdles, new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and former PM Liz Truss both vowed to proceed with the policy, signalling a hardline stance on immigration enforcement.
