Elizabeth Line Chaos as Cable Theft Sparks Major Delays

Elizabeth Line passengers endured hours of severe disruption on Friday, 9 May. Vandalism and cable theft between Romford and Chadwell Heath caused widespread delays across the network.

Shenfield to Whitechapel Worst Hit

Services between Shenfield and Whitechapel were hammered hardest. Transport for London warned of significant delays throughout the morning and afternoon peaks. Even Greater Anglia services suffered knock-on effects due to the damaged infrastructure.

Passengers Warned: Avoid Travel If Possible

The problems came after crucial trackside cabling near Romford was stolen, a known hotspot for cable theft that has struck before, causing major chaos. Commuters were urged to check before travelling, with some trains cancelled and others delayed or moved to different platforms.

While services began to recover late on Friday evening, TfL confirmed normal operations wouldn’t return until early Saturday morning.

Investigation Underway – Police Seek Public Help

British Transport Police launched an investigation into the theft and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and help catch those behind the disruption.
