Just Stop Oil Storms West End Les Mis, Sparks Chaos
Five activists from Just Stop Oil were arrested after crashing a packed Les Miserables show at the Sondheim Theatre in London’s West End. The environmental group threw the spotlight on itself by storming the stage during the iconic protest anthem, urging the crowd to “join the rebellion.”
Protest Shuts Down Iconic ‘Do You Hear The People Sing?’
The Metropolitan Police swooped on Shaftesbury Avenue at around 9pm following reports of a protest inside the theatre. Just Stop Oil, known for high-profile stunts like Wimbledon disruptions, grabbed headlines again.
As “Do You Hear The People Sing?” played, protesters appeared at both ends of the stage, unfurling bright orange banners emblazoned with their logo. The cast was forced to stop and eventually escorted offstage, halting the show momentarily amid stunned silence and angry boos.
Activists Draw Historic Parallels, Demand Climate Action
On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Just Stop Oil posted that four members had “locked” themselves to the stage. They linked the musical’s hero Jean Valjean’s desperate act of stealing bread to feed a starving child with the urgent need to tackle the climate crisis.
“The fossil fuel show can’t go on,” the group declared.
Audience Divided as Theatre Evacuated
The disruption sparked mixed reactions from the crowd, with some shouting at protesters to “get off.” Just Stop Oil confirmed the theatre was evacuated by 9:10pm and the performance was cancelled for the night.
