Fish Statue Survives Smash at Erith Roundabout
The iconic fish statue at De Luci Fish Roundabout in Erith took a hit but has been declared safe to stay put after a van crashed into its base.
Crash Chaos on the Roundabout
The collision happened on Monday, badly damaging one side of the statue’s base and leaving debris scattered across the roundabout. Photos from the scene showed the van with a mangled front end.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed officers attended but reported no injuries or arrests linked to the crash.
Quick Response and Safety Checks
Technicians, council reps, and the statue’s creator, Gary Drostle, rushed to the site to inspect the damage. The roundabout was temporarily closed to remove the van safely and clear the wreckage.
A Bexley Council spokesperson said: “The roundabout and surrounding roads are now open after a brief closure to safely extract the van. Cleanup is ongoing and should finish soon.”
The council reassured locals the statue is safe to remain while plans for repairs are worked out.
Repairs and Community Backing
Gary Drostle is assessing how best to restore the damaged base of the beloved local landmark. Residents have expressed relief the fish statue will be preserved.
The council pledged to collaborate closely with the artist to bring the landmark back to its former glory. Updates on the repair progress will be shared once plans are finalised.
