A man has been charged after smashing his way into The Cheese Room on Rochester High Street in the wee hours of New Year’s Day. The break-in occurred around 3am when the suspect allegedly smashed a window to gain entry. Luckily, no items were reported stolen during this brazen raid.

Police quickly combed through CCTV footage, leading to a swift investigation. On Tuesday 6 January 2026, officers arrested 45-year-old John Saunders from Church Street, Rochester, in connection with the break-in.

Double Whammy: Burglar Charged Over October Pub Theft

Saunders now faces a charge of burglary with intent to steal for the New Year’s incident. That’s not all — he’s also been slapped with an additional charge relating to a separate October 2025 burglary where cash was stolen from pub tills on the same street.
