Tragic Death of Seven-Year-Old Joel Urhie in Deptford Fire
Detectives are hunting for witnesses after little Joel Urhie, aged seven, died in a suspicious fire at a Deptford home in the early hours of Tuesday, 7 August. The Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command are leading the probe.
Investigation Underway as Family Grieves
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Wrigley said: “This horrific incident has left a family shattered and the tragic loss of such a young life in suspicious circumstances resonates throughout the community in Deptford.”
Joel’s mum and sister were in the house when the fire broke out on Adolphus Street at around 3:30am. Both escaped by jumping from a first-floor window. Joel’s mum remains in hospital, while his sister has been discharged.
Police Urge Public to Come Forward
DCI Wrigley pleaded: “We are working hard to establish the cause of the fire and are following several lines of enquiry. At this early stage, we have no fixed idea of motive and urge people to avoid speculation.”

A post-mortem at St Thomas’ Hospital confirmed Joel died from injuries consistent with fire and smoke inhalation. The community remains in shock as detectives race to find those responsible for this heartbreaking tragedy.
