A fire broke out beneath the Market Place car park in Burgess Hill on Thursday afternoon, March 16, causing alarm in the bustling town centre. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service confirmed the blaze started due to faulty underground electrical cables.
Swift Fire Response and Safety Measures
The emergency call came in at 12:34 pm. Fire crews rushed to the scene, quickly setting up a safety cordon around the car park. Despite the scare, the nearby shopping centre stayed open to the public. The car park itself was shut down to allow firefighters and utility teams to work without risk.
Using thermal imaging cameras, crews ensured all hotspots were extinguished before leaving at 3:14 pm.
Final Checks Passed to Utility Companies
The incident was handed over to UK Power Networks and Southern Gas Networks to investigate and repair the damaged underground cables.
