South East Coast Ambulance Service Goes Electric

South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) is about to roll out its first fully electric emergency vehicle as part of NHS England’s trailblazing Zero Emission Electric Vehicle (ZEEV) Pathfinder project. This is the start of a three-vehicle trial aimed at revolutionising green transport in emergency services.

Carbon Cut Plans and Green Goals

SECAmb is serious about slashing its carbon footprint. The Trust aims to cut emissions by 50% by 2032 and reach net zero by 2040, guided by its ambitious Green Plan. Developed with input from staff, volunteers, and partners, the plan targets the main sources of emissions: fleet, estates, and medical supplies.

With around 63% of its emissions coming from its vehicle fleet, SECAmb is prioritising ultra-low and zero emission electric vehicles. Meanwhile, estate improvements like solar panels, double glazing, roof insulation, and LED lighting tackle another 15% of emissions. The remaining 10% stems from medical equipment and gases, where greener alternatives will be explored.

Staff Champions Drive Change

SECAmb is banking on staff and volunteer involvement to succeed. It has launched a Green Champion Network to get everyone on board. Paramedic Ben Leeves, who chairs the staff network, said:

“There is clearly a lot of passion among colleagues across SECAmb to contribute to the Trust doing everything it can to reduce its carbon emissions and increase its sustainability. We hope the network keeps growing to improve our service efficiency and patient care.”

Leading the NHS in Sustainability

David Ruiz-Celada, SECAmb’s Executive Director of Strategic Planning and Transformation, added:

“Trialling these all-electric responder vehicles is a key step in reducing our carbon emissions. We’re committed to working across the organisation and with partners to significantly lower our footprint. Innovation that boosts patient care and community wellbeing while fighting climate change remains a priority.”

The electric vehicle trial marks a major milestone for SECAmb and the NHS’s wider pledge to become the first healthcare system globally to hit net zero carbon emissions.
