Psychotic Episode Ends in Tragedy in Crystal Palace
Last year, a chilling attack shook Crystal Palace. Kiiran Hibbert-Gorden, in the grip of a psychotic episode, stabbed homeless man Ion Radu to death. The Old Bailey heard Hibbert-Gorden had been discharged from psychiatric care despite skipping his anti-psychotic meds.
From Helper to Killer in Seconds
The court revealed that on June 1, 2023, Hibbert-Gorden met Ion Radu at Morley’s Fried Chicken. At first, he seemed to offer help. But shockingly, he then launched a fatal attack on Radu.
Judge Rebecca Trowler said: “It would not have occurred but for your illness.”
Before the attack, Hibbert-Gorden left his supported living centre and even tried to find Radu a place to stay. The fatal stabbing followed soon after.
Knife Always on Hand – But Not Blamed for Missing Meds
During the trial, it emerged Hibbert-Gorden regularly carried a knife for protection after previous assaults. However, the court cleared him of blame for stopping his medication, as psychiatrists had known and allowed this.
Sentenced to Secure Mental Health Hospital
Hibbert-Gorden pled guilty to manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility. He was detained under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act in a secure hospital.
A Section 41 order means he cannot be freed without the Justice Secretary’s say-so.
Remembering Ion Radu
The death of Ion Radu deeply affected his family and friends. His brother kept close contact with police during the trial. Judge Trowler admitted nothing could make up for the tragic loss.
Case Exposes Mental Health System Gaps
This heartbreaking case throws a spotlight on the struggles of mental health care. It highlights the dangers when patients like Hibbert-Gorden fall through the cracks, untreated and unmonitored.
