Dad Jailed for Life After Murdering Toddler Son Months After Gaining Custody

A Blackpool dad has been locked up for life after brutally killing his two-year-old son just months after securing sole custody. Daniel Hardcastle, 31, subjected little Damion Russell to a “horrifically violent” assault that left the toddler fatally injured.

Toddler Found Unresponsive After Shocking Attack

Damion was discovered unresponsive at Central Drive in Blackpool on 19 August last year. Despite rushed hospital care, the tiny tot sadly died from his horrific wounds. Hardcastle was convicted at Preston Crown Court and sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 22 years behind bars.

Judge Mrs Justice Hill revealed the shocking extent of Damion’s injuries. “Damion was covered in injuries top to toe and front to back,” she said. “The pathologist identified some 80 separate injuries at post mortem.”

Father’s Lies Unravel Amid Terrifying Evidence

During the trial, Hardcastle claimed Damion had fallen and hit his head on a coffee table. But doctors found devastating evidence of abuse, including a deep tear inside the toddler’s lip hinting at forceful insertion of a bottle, fractured ribs, widespread bruising, and even an adult bite mark.

The court heard Hardcastle either violently shook Damion or slammed his head against a solid object. Despite this, Hardcastle denied all charges, insisting his son’s injuries were accidental.

Disturbing Clues From Phone Searches and Behaviour

Investigators revealed disturbing details from Hardcastle’s mobile phone records. He had searched how bruises change with age—one search coming just four minutes before he called emergency services. The jury also heard he had been drinking heavily in the days before the attack and chatted online to a woman during the two nights prior to Damion’s death.

Det Supt Al Davies said: “Damion had the right to be loved and cherished by the man who should have done everything to protect him. Instead, he suffered a horrifically violent and sustained assault. This was no childhood accident.”

Damion’s grandmother, Linda Hardcastle, broke down in grief. “Damion made me so happy. Now I just feel sad, heartbroken. He had an amazing laugh and made me proud,” she said.

Community Stunned, Calls for Tougher Child Protection

The horrific case has rocked the Blackpool community and raised urgent calls for stronger child safeguarding measures. Blackpool Council has launched a local child safeguarding practice review to prevent future tragedies.

Authorities vow to continue the investigation and ensure no child suffers like Damion ever again.
