Britain’s Most Dangerous Prisoner Locked in Glass Cage for Life
Robert Maudsley, dubbed Britain’s most dangerous inmate, has been told he will spend the rest of his life locked in a glass cell — with zero chance of appealing the decision. The 68-year-old killer of paedophiles begged to live among other prisoners but was branded too deadly at HMP Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
23 Hours Alone in an Underground Glass Cage
Maudsley faces 23 hours a day confined to a tiny 5.5m by 4.5m underground cell, surrounded by bulletproof glass. Inside, he sleeps on a concrete slab, has a cardboard table and chair, and a toilet and sink bolted down. His underground cage was built in 1983, nearly ten years after his incarceration began.
As a teenager, Maudsley suffered horrific sexual abuse, fuelling his furious hatred for paedophiles – many of whom he later murdered.
Brutal Murders and a Life Sentence in Solitary
Maudsley’s killing spree includes John Farrell, who showed him photos of abused children, and Salney Darwood, a man who killed his own wife. After murdering multiple prisoners, Maudsley was declared a one-man terror behind bars and will never be freed.
Desperate Plea for a Different Life—and Death
In 2000, Maudsley begged the courts to let him die. He wrote:
“What purpose is served by keeping me locked up 23 hours a day? Why even bother to feed me and give me one hour’s exercise? Who am I really a risk to? I feel that all I have to look forward to is psychological breakdown, mental illness, and probable suicide.”
“Why can’t I have a budgie instead of flies, cockroaches, and spiders? I promise to love it and not eat it. Why can’t I have a TV to see the world and listen to classical music?”
“If the Prison Service says no, then I ask for a simple cyanide capsule which I will willingly take.”
Maudsley was first jailed aged 21 after killing while working as a gigolo and was declared unfit for trial. Locked in Broadmoor, he later tortured and killed a child molester with a fellow prisoner. Transferred to maximum security Wakefield, he murdered two more men, including one he stabbed and smashed to death in a terrifying rampage.
Maudsley will remain locked away for life — Britain’s most feared prisoner locked in a glass tomb beneath HMP Wakefield.
