Red Arrows Jets Soar Over RAF Waddington for New Dye Bay Launch

Eight iconic Hawk T1A jets thundered over RAF Waddington to celebrate the opening of a cutting-edge Dye Bay facility. The £3.6 million project was delivered by VIVO Defence Services and Henry Brothers Construction, on behalf of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).

First-of-its-Kind Facility Powers Iconic Smoke Trails

The new 260m2 Dye Bay is the first dedicated centre built to maintain the Red Arrows’ aircraft dye pods. These pods produce the famous red, white, and blue smoke trails that dazzle crowds worldwide. The facility houses advanced plant equipment to generate these vibrant plumes, plus areas for cleaning, maintenance, storage, and offices – all designed to boost efficiency and safety.

RAF Aerobatic Team’s New Home and Major Upgrade

Just months after moving from RAF Scampton, the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team is now fully settled at RAF Waddington. Wing Commander Adam Collins explained the vital role of the colourful smoke:

“The smoky trails don’t just look spectacular; they’re crucial for flight safety. They help pilots judge wind and keep close formation, even when miles apart. Our two dedicated dye teams work under tight deadlines to keep those trails perfect every time Red 1 calls, ‘Smoke on, go!’”

“This new bespoke Dye Bay means we can maintain smoke pods in a top-notch environment, making us more efficient and safer.”

Team Effort Behind The Scenes

The success of the project is credited to a stellar team effort involving VIVO, Anderson Green, Henry Brothers, DIO, and RAF Waddington Works Services. Adell Vass, DIO Regional Delivery Head, said:

“The Red Arrows are a treasured symbol of British pride. Delivering this state-of-the-art facility on a tight schedule for their first season at RAF Waddington is something we’re all proud of. Collaboration was key to this achievement.”

Jerry Moloney, VIVO’s Managing Director, added:

“Everyone loves the Red Arrows. Watching them fly over a building we helped deliver is incredible. The team is thrilled, and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved together.”

Henry Brothers’ Managing Director Ian Taylor weighed in:

“Building this vital maintenance base for the world-famous Red Arrows was a real honour. Our strong ties with RAF Waddington made this even more special. We’re proud to support the team as they continue to wow crowds sky-high.”

Big Plans for RAF Waddington’s Bright Future

RAF Waddington isn’t stopping there. Under the Defence Estate Optimisation AIR Programme, over 8,000 m2 of infrastructure will be refurbished, including aircraft parking, runway access, a revamped hangar, and new maintenance and office spaces. New Single Living Accommodation (SLA) will replace outdated housing, accommodating around 150 extra personnel. The upgrades will secure RAF Waddington’s role as the home of the Red Arrows for years to come.
