UK Public Bodies Offered Free Official Portraits of King Charles III
The UK Government is rolling out new funding to supply public organisations with a free official portrait of His Majesty The King. This move celebrates the dawn of a new reign and gives institutions across Britain the chance to display the monarch’s image.
Who Can Apply?
Councils, courts, schools, police forces, fire and rescue services – basically, all key public bodies – will be invited to apply for a government-funded portrait of King Charles III. This initiative covers the whole UK and aims to replace the iconic images of Queen Elizabeth II hanging in public buildings nationwide.
The scheme will launch later this year, following the Coronation on 6 May, once the Royal Household releases the official portraits. Eligible organisations can request one free framed copy to mark this historic moment.
Top Officials Praise the Scheme
Oliver Dowden MP, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said: “We have entered a new reign in our history. Now, as we unite for The King’s Coronation, these new portraits will stand as a visible tribute in buildings up and down the country to the nation’s ultimate public servant.” “They will help us turn a page in our history together – a fitting tribute to our new sovereign. I am sure they will take pride of place in public buildings across the land.”
John Glen, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, added: “This scheme will allow thousands of public institutions across the UK to mark this defining moment with pride. The Coronation is an opportunity for the whole country to unite, and these portraits continue a very British tradition celebrating this momentous occasion.”
A New Era in British History
With King Charles III now on the throne, the UK Government sees it as vital for public authorities to commemorate this new chapter. The portraits aim to strengthen civic pride while honouring the new sovereign’s role as head of state.
