A murder investigation is under way after a 27-year-old man died following what police have described as a “violent and unprovoked” attack while he was cycling in Leicester.

George Glover suffered life-threatening injuries after being punched as he cycled along Narborough Road at around 6.30am on Monday, 17 August.

The incident happened close to the junction with Noel Street.

Police became aware of the attack on Wednesday after a member of Mr Glover’s family reported that he was receiving treatment at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham.

Despite medical treatment, Mr Glover died on Thursday.

Enquiries by police established that he had been punched while cycling along Narborough Road.

A 31-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman have since been arrested on suspicion of robbery and conspiracy to commit murder. Both remain in police custody.

Family pay tribute to George

Mr Glover’s family described him as a much-loved son and big brother to three siblings whose loss was already being deeply felt.

They said George was a hardworking and focused young man who had worked hard to secure a job he loved.

Outside work, he enjoyed gaming, putting bike parts together, Anime, Lego and collecting Pokémon cards.

His family described him as “loving, loyal” and someone with a good sense of humour, adding that his younger siblings looked up to him.

They said George had faced physical challenges following a difficult start in life but that they were incredibly proud of the young man he had become.

Police appeal for witnesses and footage

Detective Inspector Kevin Hames, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, is leading the investigation.

He described what happened as a “violent and unprovoked attack” which had resulted in a young man losing his life.

Police say Narborough Road is a busy route into and out of Leicester and are urging anyone who was in the area on Monday morning to consider whether they witnessed anything that could assist detectives.

Investigators are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant CCTV, dashcam, doorbell or mobile phone footage.
