Knife Chaos Sparks Emergency Police Powers in Hackney

A stabbing in Hackney tonight has forced police to unleash tough new stop-and-search powers under a Section 60 order. Officers are on high alert to prevent any more knife crime spiralling out of control.

What’s Happened in Hackney?

Police rushed to reports of a stabbing that left the victim with non-life-threatening injuries. Trouble didn’t stop there. Multiple calls came in about gangs of males brandishing knives and fighting, heightening fears for local safety.

To crack down, a Section 60 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act order kicked in at 6pm and will run until 6am Sunday, February 23. This means cops can stop and search anyone without needing usual suspicion — a rare power to snuff out violence fast.

Where’s the No-Go Zone?

The Section 60 zone covers a wide swathe of Hackney and nearby spots. It stretches from Seven Sisters Road near Seven Sisters BR station, across to Warwick Reservoir and Walthamstow Marshes. It also includes Homerton High Street, Dalston Road, Green Lanes, Brownswood Park — before looping back to Seven Sisters BR.

Police Crackdown Underway

The Met Police’s Homicide Command is leading the investigation into the stabbing and knife fights. Hackney Police say they’re constantly reviewing intel to ensure this tough Section 60 order stays justified.

“We understand the concerns this incident will raise among local residents, and we are using every resource available to ensure public safety. Section 60 is a vital tool in deterring violent crime and helping us prevent further incidents.” – Hackney Police spokesperson
