Fatal Worcester Fire Linked to Arson Attack on Muslim Centre
Police probing a fatal blaze in Worcester say two fires in the city are connected. One of the incidents involved a suspected deliberate arson at a Muslim community centre.
Man Found Dead in Garage Fire
Emergency crews rushed to a garage fire on Surman Street at around 6am on Thursday (26 February). After dousing the flames, firefighters found a man’s body inside the building.
The victim has yet to be formally identified. A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.
Second Fire Hits Worcester Muslim Community Hub
Later that morning, another fire broke out at Unity House Community Hub on Stanley Road, next to Worcester Mosque. The building’s owners, the Worcester Muslim Welfare Association, called it a “deliberate act of arson” and urged for it to be treated as a hate crime.
Police Confirm Fires Are Linked
West Mercia Police now believe the two incidents are connected. A spokesperson said, “We currently believe this fire is connected to the incident on Surman Street.”
Detective Chief Inspector Gareth Lougher added that a major investigation is underway following the fatal discovery.
